We began our collaborative work on ecological design in the fall of 2019, a few months before the pandemic hit Baltimore. Many of us were based at Johns Hopkins University, and we wanted to develop a space for working together that did not amount to another small bubble within the larger bubble that was our university campus. We learned that a company called Shelter Systems produces geodesic domes that can be quickly assembled and disassembled as portable outdoor classrooms. An 18’ diameter dome became our mobile studio workshop, and we took it places.
On account of the pandemic, we have not been able to do nearly as much as we have wished thus far with this portable studio structure. When conditions improve, it will see the light of day once again. Here are some images of the dome in the wild. If you have any ideas for possible events or uses, please get in touch via curators@ecodesigncollective.org.
