Hope the changing seasons are treating you well! For those in Baltimore, here’s a chance to meet and catch up in person, and for those farther away, an invitation to support some important environmental justice work underway in our city.
Join us this Friday afternoon on October 15th (4pm-6pm) for an outdoor meetup at the YNot Lot in Station North (4 W. North Ave) – an informal fall gathering for our collective, a chance to check in with each other in person, and also a chance to learn more about the zero waste campaign gaining momentum here in Baltimore.
EDC faculty and students have been working closely this academic year with the South Baltimore Community Land Trust (SBCLT), a community environmental justice organization devoted to the cause of development without displacement, and a leader in the city’s zero waste movement. The movement aims to develop alternatives to the burn-and-bury model of landfilling and incineration that has had such serious effects on air quality and environmental health in the city, most especially for poor residents of color in South Baltimore.
The zero waste coalition has organized a public rally here in Baltimore on October 22nd, calling on our city to support the development of alternative waste strategies like community compost infrastructure. All those who can make it are welcome. And whether you’re local or farther afield, here is a petition as well to signal support for the development of zero waste alternatives.
We’d love to see you at the YNot Lot this Friday the 15th to hang out with us and meet others in our growing ecological design network, and to learn more about this campaign in particular. It’s a chance to meet us and the zero waste organizers we’ve been working with, as well as to see some of the amazing broken glass art made by the youth artists of Baltimore Broken Glass. Some of these young artists will be joining us in person too!
Hope to connect with you on Friday afternoon, either in person or via a shout-out on our Commons. Let us know you’re coming by clicking that you’re “Going” above (you’ll have to be logged into your EDC account to do so). Look for our white pop-up geodesic dome at the YNot Lot. Please keep the pandemic protocols in mind, including the Baltimore city mask mandate and other necessary precautions.
