Postdoctoral Fellowship in Ecological Justice and Design

The Department of Anthropology in the Krieger School of Arts & Sciences seeks applicants for a two-year postdoctoral fellowship in ecological justice and design, to begin on July 1, 2021. Applicants from anthropology and other fields in the environmental social sciences and humanities are encouraged to apply. The fellow will assist with the teaching of a year-long sustainable design practicum for graduate and undergraduate students in 2021-22 and 2022-23, serving as lead instructor for the studio class each spring. Duties will include developing and coordinating the partnerships with Baltimore community organizations that anchor the practicum course.

The fellow will also support the work of the Ecological Design Collective, a new community for radical ecological imagination and collaborative design practice, led by faculty at Johns Hopkins University and the Maryland Institute College of Art as well as Baltimore city partners. Responsibilities will include developing and coordinating annual seminar series and other events for the duration of the fellowship; producing works of graphic design; managing online content for the collective website; and assisting with social media and communications.

Qualifications

The successful candidate will have:

  1. Defended a PhD in the environmental social sciences or humanities by June 30, 2021
  2. A proven record of interdisciplinary work on themes of ecology, justice, and design
  3. Experience teaching and mentoring university students
  4. Excellent organizational skills and practical motivation
  5. Some technical experience in design applications, techniques, and methods
  6. Demonstrated commitment to community-based learning and/or social design
