SDP 2021-2022 Week 6: Collaborative Research Design

This week our readings were focused on how to work collaboratively through the research process. Our readings were from Adrienne Marie Brown’s Emergent Strategy, and Max Liboiron’s An Anticolonial Pollution Science. We also explored the This is Service Design Doing (TISDD) method library. After having an excellent learning and brainstorming session last week, this week we turned to how we, as students and researchers, can use our skills to benefit SBCLT.

First we offered what we think we each individually can contribute, then we split into two groups, which will focus on the two different tracks outlined by Shashawnda and Greg. Lais, Burge, Ryan, Alex and Anand will focus on the institutional track, while Bianca, Emerson, Brianne, Raychel, Eesha and Aimee will focus on the residential track. Within these groups we discussed the specific challenges we face, the ultimate goals for the tracks and strategies we can employ to start working towards them. These discussions culminated in some specific tactics for gathering information, getting key stakeholders involved, and generating more awareness about the city’s compost pilot program and Zero Waste goals more broadly, which we will begin pursuing over the next few weeks.

An outline of the goals and strategies of each track is available here Miro | Online Whiteboard for Visual Collaboration

In the coming weeks, we will continue to collaborate with our fantastic partners while taking on individual tasks in each track. Immediately, we’re working to share information about the upcoming direct action at city hall, and get more to sign the petition to put pressure on Mayor Scott to take decisive action toward getting food out of the waste stream in Baltimore. We’re also working to spread the word about the PLAN meeting on campus tomorrow.
